Near extinct due to poaching in the late 1800s–early 1900s, the southern white rhino is the second largest land animal next to elephants.

The Wilds is the home base for the American Institute of Rhinoceros Science (AIRS), a multi-institution collaboration to study the biggest challenges to maintaining sustainable populations of rhinos in human care.
