Conservation Medicine Residency

The Wilds offers a 3-year residency in Wildlife and Conservation Medicine.

This program, accredited by the American College of Zoological Medicine, is available every three years.

Designed to provide the trainee with exposure to ecology, epidemiology and veterinary medicine in the study of free-ranging and semi free-ranging wildlife populations, the Wilds’ residency program provides residents experience in medicine and anesthesia as well as training in development and execution of research and methods in conservation medicine.

The Wilds is uniquely suited for training veterinarians in the emerging field of conservation medicine. Our institution is built upon interdisciplinary research programs in veterinary medicine, ecology, and animal management, and our professional partners include the Columbus Zoo, the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and several local colleges and universities.

We are committed to emphasizing and furthering conservation programs and research, and to incorporating education into all aspects of our programs.

Unlike most traditional zoological facilities, the Wilds is able to focus on solutions to the problems facing wild populations. Situated on over 10,000 acres of diverse habitat, our facilities house large groups of animals in semi-free ranging conditions that encourage the development of natural social groupings and behaviors. Species chosen for management programs at the Wilds have been selected to meet specific programmatic and research goals, and wildlife research programs, currently including freshwater mussel and Eastern hellbender health and habitat research, are conducted in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The escalating problems of habitat and biodiversity loss, environmental pollution and emerging diseases at the human/domestic animal/wildlife interface are creating a greater need for wildlife epidemiologists and veterinarians with skills in diverse areas such as ecology and geographic information systems application.

The aim of the Wilds’ residency program is to equip veterinarians of the future with the skills and expertise to study and solve the problems of animal and ecosystem health in a rapidly changing world.
