Forest Remnant Ecology

Remnant
Remnant forests can provide a window into the past to study the resilience of the land and provide an ecological reference point for future woodland restoration projects.

Although mining activities took place throughout most of the area at the Wilds, there are pockets of native forest remnants that were not directly impacted.

By studying these areas, we can gain insight into the original ecological state. We have targeted several trophic levels to study including soil dwelling organisms, herbaceous and woody vegetation, small mammals, and predators and comparing them to disturbance parameters of several woodland remnant areas. Studies are also examining which native woody plant species can thrive in the poor soil environment through long-term field trials.
