Status: Endangered (USFWS), SSP
Range: Sub-Saharan Africa and Northern Iran
Cheetahs are the fastest land mammals in the world (up to 70 miles per hour) but can only maintain this speed for less than half a mile. Habitat loss and poaching have driven their population down severely. Only about 10,000 remain in the wild. Maintaining a healthy, genetically diverse population is the conservation focus for this endangered carnivore.
