African Wild Dog

African Wild Dog

Lycaon pictus

Status: Endangered (USFWS), SSP
Range: Southern, Eastern and Central Africa
These pack-oriented animals have a strong social structure, aiding them in hunting prey much larger than themselves. With an 80% success rate, they are impressive hunters. Habitat fragmentation and persecution have been the major causes of their decline. Fewer than 5,000 wild dogs remain in the wild.
